Are there any good websites on coral reefs ?
I'm working on my research paper, and this is what I have so far.
Coral reefs, also called the rain forests of the oceans, are the second richest ecosystem on Earth. They have this nickname because of the prosperous diversity of life they maintain. The Great Barrier Reef in the northeast part of Australia is one of the common examples of coral reefs. The Great Barrier Reef is also one of the biggest reefs in the world. Reefs also have several different types, and serve as homes for various plants and animals. Sadly, reefs are dying out at a startling rate. Even though coral reefs are tremendously helpful and beneficial to humans, their survival is being endangered by human activities.
Coral reefs are underwater structures made of limestone ridges that are built by little coral animals called coral polyps. The job of coral polyps is to slowly secrete skeletons of limestone to eventually let them accumulate and form coral reefs. Since there are only a few environments that are important to the growth and development of coral reefs, there are just a few places where they are found. Corals can only live in clear and warm water, with enough light going through for photosynthesis. This is the reason why most coral reefs are found in shallow, tropical seas.
There are many different varieties of coral reefs. The three major types of coral reefs are fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls. Fringing reefs are located in the tropics, generally directly off the shoreline. They hug the coastline and barrier reefs grow farther away from the coast, with a lagoon in between.
There are also several types of corals, which include soft corals, sea fans, and hard corals. Soft corals feel like soft shoe leather and their skeleton has been concentrated to tiny rods that are found throughout their tissues. Sea fans have a stretchy internal skeleton and many tiny polyps on the branches of the flat structure.
Many different plants and animals also live in the coral reefs. In fact, coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, mainly because thousands of species of plants and animals live in its cracks and crevices. Because of their convoluted shape, reefs provide habitats for a magnificent variety of tropical fish, along with snails, clams, and sponges.
This doesn't even come up to 2 pages and I need 4. I need more useful information to write in this, please help me out.
Thanks!
