Myelodysplastic syndrome
Myelodysplastic syndrome is a disorder characterized by abnormal blood cell production in the bone marrow, leading to low numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The low levels of all three types of blood cells in this patient's complete blood count results are indicative of myelodysplastic syndrome.
An older adult male patient receives chemotherapy for treating cancer. A complete blood count report after chemotherapy shows red blood cells 3.02 million cells/microliter (normal is 4.35 to 5.65 million cells/microliter), white blood cells 3,200 cells/microliter (normal is 4,500 to 11,000 cells/microliter), and platelets 100,000/microliter (normal is 150,00 to 450,000/microliter).
