an object weighing 578N and suspended by two wires. each wire makes an angle of 35degree with the horizontal. find the tension on each wire.

1 answer

because of symettry, you can assume each wire handles half the load.

578/2=TensionLeft/sin35
solve for tension left.

because of symmetry, tensionRight has to be the same.

If the angles were different, here is the long way.

Vertical forces:
578=TensionLeft*sinLeft + TensionRight*sinRight

Horizonal forces:
TensionRight*cosRight=TensionLeft*cosLeft

so you have two equations, two unknowns, with some algebra, solvable.
