Amusement Park Adventure

K. Reiter

David scurried down the crowded walkway weeding in between customers.

“Hurry up,” he hollered to Jose, who had gotten stuck behind a family with a wailing child who wanted to play the ring toss game.

“Coming,” Jose yelled back as he picked up the pace in haste to catch up with David.

The faint screams from up above and the smell of buttery popcorn filled the air. David looked up in awe as the thrill ride twirled around and around. He had dreamed about riding the new ride ever since he read about it online. It was even more spectacular than he had imagined. It was shiny yellow and blue and could be seen from everywhere in the park. The distorted face of the clown made it seem mysterious and somewhat terrifying. But David didn’t care; he was determined to ride it.

“The line is not that long,” he explained to Jose as he leaped to secure his place in line. The squeaking sound coming from the ride overhead made Jose even more panicked. His entire body started to tremble.

“I’m not sure I can ride this with you,” he muttered as he gawked up above and watched the passengers hang upside down like clothes on a clothesline.

“You have to,” David begged. “I’ll buy you a juicy corn dog and a massive drink when we get off.”

“How about we ride that one?” Jose pointed to a much smaller and calmer ride.

“That’s for babies,” David replied with a disgusted look on his face. “It’s almost our turn!”

Jose could feel his palms getting sweaty. He had butterflies in the pit of his stomach, and he felt like he was going to puke.

“Too late to back out now. We’re up.” David yelled as he grabbed onto Jose’s arm and pulled him onto the platform. First, David got into the shiny banana yellow car and David hesitantly followed. The young girl with blue hair came around and ensured all the safety latches were securely in place.

“Ready!” she yelled out to the big tattooed guy in charge of the big levers. He, too, had blue hair.

“I can’t believe I’m entrusting my life to two people with blue…., “Jose started, but the ride took off before he could finish.

“AHHHHHH!” both boys squealed as they rounded the first turn and then the other one. Jose closed his eyes tightly and held on for dear life while David looked around and threw his arms in the air. The ride came to an abrupt stop, and Jose took a deep breath. He felt his face and his arms to make sure he was still alive.

The roller coaster turns the passengers upside down.

“That was epic!” David roared and hugged Jose. Jose’s face was as white as a ghost, and he didn’t say a word. Both boys stumbled out of the car and back into the crowd. David continued to talk nonstop about this turn and that turn and all the ones in the middle.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” David finally asked Jose.

“Where’s my corn dog and my drink?” Jose asked with little expression on his face. David started to laugh.

“You got it! You earned it,” David said as he continued to giggle. David rode the ride two more times, and Jose ate his corn dog alone on the bench below.
