Almost everyone knows what stress feels like: a tight throat, a clenched jaw, trouble concentrating. On a physical level, whenever your body perceives a threat in the nearby environment (whether that threat is a friend with whom you've had an argument or a lion on the savannah), it releases more of certain hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. As a result of the increase in these hormones, the body devotes less attention to functions like digestion and more attention to keeping muscles in a state of tension, ready to fight if they need to.

The organizational structure used in the text is primarily cause and effect. The text explains how the perception of a threat leads to physical reactions in the body (the cause), specifically the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which then result in specific physical responses (the effect), such as muscle tension and decreased attention to other functions like digestion.
