Adopt Your New Best Friend

A. Gautam

In the U.S., more than one million cats and dogs that could be adopted are euthanized instead. To euthanize is to kill in a painless way. The lives of these animals are cut short too early. The simple reason is that the number of pets that come into shelters is much greater than the number of pets that end up being adopted. If more people adopted the pets instead of buying them, the problem would be easily solved. Therefore, ask your parents to let you adopt a cat or a dog, instead of buying one, if you are looking for a new pet.

Often, animals end up in shelters because the owners cannot take them along with a move or a divorce. These pets are housebroken, well-trained, vaccinated, and able to bond with humans. These animals just need another loving home. One more benefit is that these animals are cheaper because of the medical care they have always received.

Adopting animals from shelters is an act of charity, which comes with a positive feeling of doing a good deed. Buying animals from a pet store or a puppy mill, which is a breeding factory for puppies in terrible conditions, comes with the guilt of participation in a bad deed. These dogs are victims living in years of captivity and without care and love, which they cannot give back. You end up with dogs with behavioral problems and health issues. Buying puppies from these mills is a terrible decision.

When you adopt an animal from a shelter, you make room for another animal to be adopted. By helping one animal, you are helping another one as well. It is kindness that keeps paying forward.

Shelters near your home may have the perfect best friend of the size, color, personality, and breed that you want. Take your time to find out about the animal you want to adopt from a shelter or a rescue organization to make your and your new best friend’s life easier.
