you have to change the demoninator in the fraction to be the same as the fraction you are adding to it by multiplying the whole fraction by a whole munber.

example

1/2 + 1/8 =
4*(1/2) + 1/8 =
4/8 + 1/8 = 5/8
fractions plus whole numbers you just change the whole number to a fraction

example:

4 also equal 4/1, 8/2, 16/4

4 + 3/4 =
16/4 + 3/4 = 19/4
