No. You need to use a common denominator for the fractions.
What is the common denominator for 1/2, 1/4, and 5/8?

There is four people sitting here all over the age of 24 and we can not get the correct answer for this:
What about this:
ADD:

(2+3+3) can we add the whole numbers by themselves?
they would equal 8.
1/8+1/8+5/8=
8 7/8

You're getting close.
The whole numbers add up to 8.
You need to find equivalent fractions. Imagine a pizza with 8 equal pieces. If you eat 4 pieces, you've eaten half the pizza. So -- 1/2 = 4/8
1/2 = 4/8
1/4 = 2/8
4/8 + 2/8 + 5/8 = 11/8 = 1 3/8
8 + 1 3/8 = 9 3/8
