According to the law of conservation of mass, what should the product side of this single replacement reaction look like?

Zn+2HCl--->?
A. H2ZnCl2
B. H2+Zn+Cl2
C. H2+ZnCl2
D. ZnCl2
Is the answer D?

9 answers

Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) ---> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

It is D, but don't forget to include the extra hydrogen atoms, or else the equation violates the law of conservation of mass. In this case, hydrogen gas (H2) is formed.
