A wood salesperson has a fenced area in which they keep all their wood to keep it organized. The area itself is 12 ft. long and 8 ft. wide. The fence is 8 ft. high. They have bigger pieces of wood that are 4 ft. long and 2 ft. wide and smaller pieces of wood that are 2 ft. long and 1 ft. wide. Each piece of wood is 6 in., or ½ ft., tall.

What is the volume of the fenced in area in square ft.?
If the salesperson put all big pieces of wood in the fenced area, what is the most that they could fit?
If the salesperson put all little pieces of wood in the fenced area, what is the most that they could fit?
The wood salesperson wants to get a banner made that can wrap around the outside of the fence. What is the area of the banner that the sales person needs to buy?
Write three different combinations of a number of big pieces of wood and a number of little pieces of wood that could be placed inside the area together.

To find the volume of the fenced in area, we simply need to multiply the length, width, and height of the fenced area:

Volume = length x width x height
Volume = 12 ft x 8 ft x 8 ft
Volume = 768 cubic ft

If the salesperson put all big pieces of wood in the fenced area, the most they could fit would be:

Big piece volume = 4 ft x 2 ft x 0.5 ft = 4 cubic ft

Total big pieces that could fit = 768 cubic ft / 4 cubic ft = 192 pieces

If the salesperson put all little pieces of wood in the fenced area, the most they could fit would be:

Small piece volume = 2 ft x 1 ft x 0.5 ft = 1 cubic ft

Total small pieces that could fit = 768 cubic ft / 1 cubic ft = 768 pieces

The salesperson would need to buy a banner that can wrap around the outside of the fence. To calculate the area of the banner needed, we first need to find the perimeter of the fence:

Perimeter = 2(length + width)
Perimeter = 2(12 ft + 8 ft)
Perimeter = 40 ft

Now, to find the area of the banner:

Banner area = Perimeter x height
Banner area = 40 ft x 8 ft
Banner area = 320 square ft

Three different combinations of a number of big pieces of wood and a number of little pieces of wood that could be placed inside the area together are:

- 150 big pieces and 250 little pieces
- 100 big pieces and 450 little pieces
- 75 big pieces and 600 little pieces
