Range = (Vo^2/g)*sin(2*30)
= 22,092 meters
Max height H:
g H = (Vo*sin30)^2/2 = Vo^2/8
H = Vo^2/(8 g) = 3189 m
a trench mortar fires a shell at an angle of 30 degrees with the horizontal and with a speed of 500 m/s. find its range and the maximum height it attains?

The numbers I just calculated greatly exceed the range and max height of real "trench mortars". This is apparently because the launch speed you were provided is much too high.
