A team of runners is needed to run a 1/4 mile relay race. If each runner must run 1/16 mile, how many runners will be needed?

( 1 / 4 ) / ( 1 / 16 )

When you dividing fractions by fractions then:

( a / b ) / ( c / d ) = a ∙ d / b ∙ c

so

( 1 / 4 ) / ( 1 / 16 ) = 1 ∙ 16 / 4 ∙ 1 = 16 / 4 = 4

Check of result:

4 ∙ 1 / 16 mile = 4 / 16 mile = 4 ∙ 1 / 4 ∙ 4 mile = 1 / 4 mile
16 divided by 4 equals 4 so that means 4/16 = 1/4 so for each runner to run 1/16 of a mile there would need to be 4 runners

Have a good day/night :)
