force down = m g - drag
so
m g-drag = m a where a is acceleration down
a = g - drag/m
so
at the beginning, with low drag, the acceleration down is about 9.8 m/s^2
as the drag increases, the a goes down until terminal velocity is reached. That is when m g = drag
when you open the chute:
suddenly drag goes way up
if you were moving at terminal velocity, suddenly your drag is much bigger than m g
your acceleration is the negative (upwards), and you slow down
you slow down until you reach a new terminal velocity where m g = new bigger air drag
