A roller coaster has 3 trains with 8 rows per train. Riders stand in rows of 4, for a total of 32 rider per train. The operators of the coaster recorded the number of riders on each train during a run. On the first train, the operators reported that 7 1/4 rows were filled. On the second train, all 8 rows were filled, and on the third train, 5 1/2 rows were filled.

1/4 row is 1 rider
so 3/4 row is three riders
so the first train has 32 - 3 = 29 riders and 3 empty spaces
the second train has 32 riders
third train has 5 1/2 * 4 = 20 + 2 = 22 riders so 10 empty
total riders = 29 + 32 + 22
empty spaces = 32 * 3 - 83 = 13 (bad luck :( )
or use 3 empty + 10 empty = 13 empty
so 3/4 row is three riders
so the first train has 32 - 3 = 29 riders and 3 empty spaces
the second train has 32 riders
third train has 5 1/2 * 4 = 20 + 2 = 22 riders so 10 empty
total riders = 29 + 32 + 22
empty spaces = 32 * 3 - 83 = 13 (bad luck :( )
or use 3 empty + 10 empty = 13 empty
