The opening of Smithville's park is a happy ending to a long project. Hundreds of people turned out for the celebration.
A community picnic marked the grand opening of a new park in Smithville on Saturday. Visitors were pleased with the park's beauty and design. They were also thrilled that the year-long project is finally complete.
Last summer, Smithville's town officials decided their community should build a park. "We need a place where kids from different schools can have fun together," Mayor Jackson said. The town supported the decision to build the park. An unused parking lot was chosen for the park's location.
Designing the park took four months. Then workers began tearing up the blacktop and bringing in soil. They planted grass and trees with help from local students. Swings, slides, and jungle gyms were placed around a picnic area at the center of the park.
As Mayor Jackson welcomed the smiling visitors to the grand opening, he was very proud. "This park is a special gift to everyone in Smithville," he said.
