A molecule consists of two atoms. The atoms have masses of 20 u and 10 u and are 1.08 *10^-10 m apart. How far from the first atom is the center of mass of the molecule?

Can someone help please I tried:
(20u*(1.08 *10^-10m)) + (10u*(1.08 *10^-10))/ (20u+10u) and just got 1.08 *10^-10m again. That isn't right, I know thta it should be closer to the first atom I understand that but cant calculate it.

1 answer

20 * x = 10 (1.08 -x)

20 x + 10 x = 10.8

30 x = 10.8

x = .36
so
.36*10^-10 = 3.6 * 10^-11 meters
