A boy spent 1/4 of his money on sweets and 3/8 on bus fares. What fraction of his money is left?

What you need is a common denominator, so the two bottom numbers are the same. So you want both bottom numbers, in this case, to be 8.
So you times the 4 by 2, remembering that whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top, so you times the one by 2 as well giving you 2/8.
2/8 + 3/8 is 5/8 which is what he has spent of his money.
8/8 is his full amount, without anything spent.
So 8/8 - 5/8 is 3/8.
He has 3/8 of his money left :)
