A body is just floating on the surface of a liquid. The density of the body is the same as that of the liquid. The body is slightly pushed down. What will happen to the body?

1 answer

If the body is pushed down slightly, it will sink into the liquid until it reaches a point where it displaces an amount of liquid equal to its own weight. At this point, the body will stop sinking and remain in equilibrium, floating at a certain depth in the liquid. Since the body has the same density as the liquid, it will stay at this equilibrium point and not sink any further.
