why is Denver Colorado weather different then western new York?

Look at the elevations and proximity to the ocean.
Denver high- cold, damp, west, wind lifting over Rocky mountains dropping snow and moisture, air drying out, cold light powder snow.
Western NY - weather coming from the west still but from Canada over Great Lakes, picking up moisture, damp, wet, heavy snow, lots of it (called lake effect by some) particularly around Buffalo NY.
