In the town of Mayfield, the precipitation totals are set to zero at the beginning of each year. Because of a drought early in the year, the totals on March 31st were below normal at -27 inches. The next three months were very rainy, and by July 1st the precipitation totals averaged 13 inches.
How much rain, in inches, did Mayfield get from April 1st through June 30th?

If the total average from Jan 1 is +13, the rainfall in April, May and June must be much more than 13*3

3*-27 + 3 * x = 13 * 6

3*-27 + 3 * x = 13 * 6

but perhaps it means the 27 is not the average but the total in the three months
-27 + x = 13*6

-27 + x = 13*6
