Juan Ramirez sells suits in a major department store on weekends. He earns a commission of 5 percent on the first ten suits, and if he sells more than ten, he earns an additional 3 percent on the additional suits. Last weekend Juan sold thirteen $250.00 suits. What was his commission?

A. $260.00
B. $210.40
C. $185.00
D. $147.50

I picked C, because if you take the
first ten suits and multiply that by $250.00 it equals 2500.00 and then multiply that by 5% it equals 125.00. Then you take the additional 3 suits and multiply that by $250.00 it equals $750.00 and multiply that by 8% it equals $60.00. Add $125.00 and $60.00 it equals $185.00. Is my thinking correct on working this word problem?

C is not right.

250 * 10 * 0.05 = 125

3 * 250 * 0.03 = 22.50

125 + 22.5 = ?

The question said an additional 3 percent. Wouldn't that imply adding 3 percent to the 5 percent, which is 8 percent for the 3 additional suits?

Yes. Your interpretation and answer are probably right.

the first 10 suits are commissioned at 5% of the $250...so the math formula would look like this... $250-5%=12.5x10=125.... Then the additional 3 suits are commissioned @and additional 3% to the 5%=8% Of 250...which is $250-8%x3=60... so add 125+60=$185.00 commission earned for Juan.
