I have a balance equation but i need to know how to find the different states of each element. How do I do that? Ca + 2 HNO3 => Ca(NO3)2 + H2

You look up the properties of each. Ca is a solid (s), HNO3 I assume is aqueous (aq), Ca(NO3)2 will be aq and H2 is gas (g).
