Many people are trying to reduce their
carbon footprint.
Amrita’s carbon footprint this year was 85% of last year’s footprint.
If her carbon footprint this year is 34 tonnes,what was her carbon footprint last year?

0.85x = 34

x = 40

its in percent (85%) i don't think it should be in decimal when i tryed it i got the answer as 28.9 tonnes

To multiply or divide by a percent, we need to change it into a decimal.

28.9 tonnes can't be right since this year's footprint is less than last year's.

Let's check my answer.

x*85/100=34 tonnes
x*85/100*100= 34*100
x85 = 3400
x = 3400/85
Therefore: x= 40 tonnes.
