b How can you put a methyl on the number one carbon without making it a longer chain?
Leaving a) Draw it out on a propylhexane, on one side you have a 2C chain, and on the other, you have a 3chain. If you attach a propyl to number three, you have now from the right a chain of seven, meriting a new name.
