1/3(3x+9)=2x+3

Distributive property: 1x + 3 = 2x + 3

1x = 2x

1x / 1 = 2x / 1

x = 2x

Now do you see it?

Thanks so much!

But why doesn't it work when I do:
1/3(3x+9)=2x+3
1x + 3 = 2x + 3
1x-2x=3-3
-x=0
????????????????

Your goal is to find x. To do so, you separate the constants from the variables. You cannot subtract 2x in this case, you need to divide.

actually, you can subtract the 2x. Your calculations are correct. It still comes out x=0

1/3(3x+9)=2x+3

x + 3 = 2x + 3
x-x + 3 = 2x -x + 3
3 = x +3
3-3 = x + 3 -3

x = 0
