40 - x / 3 = 4 Add x / 3 to both sides

40 - x / 3 + x / 3 = 4 + x / 3

40 = 4 + x / 3 Subtract 4 to both sides

40 - 4 = 4 + x / 3 - 4

36 = x / 3 Multiply both sides by 3

108 = x

x = 108

If your exspressio mean :

( 40 - x ) / 3 = 4

Then multiply both sides by 3

3 * ( 40 - x ) / 3 = 3 * 4

40 - x = 12 Subtract 12 to both sides

40 - x - 12 = 12 - 12

28 - x = 0 Add x to both sides

28 - x + x = 0 + x

28 = x

x = 28
