(f+g) just means to add f and g. Since they're both functions of x, that's why the unfamiliar notation.
(f+g)(x) = f(x)+g(x) = (3x+1)+(x+2) = 4x+3
so, (f+g)(1) = 4(1)+3 = 7
or, you could evaluate f(1)+g(1) = 4+3
(f+g)(x) = f(x)+g(x) = (3x+1)+(x+2) = 4x+3
so, (f+g)(1) = 4(1)+3 = 7
or, you could evaluate f(1)+g(1) = 4+3
