Hi. What was the percentage increase in energy consumption from 1970-1988? In 1970 it was 66.4 and in 1988 it was 80.2 So I divide 80.2 by 66.4, right? So I get 1.2. Is the percentage increase 1.2%, .2%, 20% or 120%? Thanks!

First subtract to find how much energy consumption has increased.

80.2 - 66.4 = 13.8

Then divide:

13.8 / 66.4 = 0.207

Convert that to a percent: 0.207 = 21%

Isn't that the same as doing 80.2/66.4, getting 1.207, and saying it is 21%?
Answered by Ms. Sue
No. 1.207 is 121% -- not 21%.

When you change a decimal to a percent, you multiply the decimal by 100.

We can prove that the increase is about 21% by multiplying: .207 * 66.4 = ?
Answered by Victor
Yeah, but since it is 21% over 100% (121%), that means it increased by 21%.
