for any nonzero x,
x^-1 = 1/x
1 = x^0
x = x^1
1/x = x^0/x^1 = x^(0-1) = x^-1
x^-1 = 1/x
1 = x^0
x = x^1
1/x = x^0/x^1 = x^(0-1) = x^-1
