grandma trying to help my grandson in 5th grade math...question/"explain how knowing that 5 divided 8=0.625 helps you write the decimal for 4 5/8?

It is because the composite fraction is the sum of the whole number 4 and the of fraction that is 5 divided by 8.

4 5/8 = 4 + (5/8)
= 4 + (0.625)
= 4.625
