1). What helped the economy of the West to grow?

Transportation helped the west grow. As cars and trucks became more reliable and more roads were paved, it became fairly easy to drive across country. Of course, for at least half of the 20th century the railroad was a major source of transportation. In the latter part of the century, planes carried passengers, mail and a little freight.
The growth of the Asian markets was also attractive to manufacturers on the West Coast.
