A) Express the distance from P to the point (1,2) as a function of x. Simplify completely.

d = √[(x-1)^2 + (y-2)^2]
= √[(x-1)^2 + (x^2-3-2)^2]
= √(x^2-2x+1 + x^4-10x^2+25)
= √(x^4-9x^2-2x+26)
