The face-off areas in ice hockey have a diameter of 29.9 feet. Find the area of a face-off circle. Use 3.1.4. for pi. Round to the nearest tenth if necessary.

Although I was an English and social studies teacher, occasionally I taught a section of 7th grade math. When I discovered that I was only about 95% accurate when demonstrating on the board, I was embarrassed. I told the class that if they discovered I had made a stupid mistake, I'd give anyone extra credit for politely calling it to my attention. Worked like a charm. <g>

I recall my class in analytic geometry in high school. There was one guy named Andy who would read a comic or something during one of Mr. Jarmon's involved solutions. After two blackboards were filled with equations and things didn't come out right, Andy would look up and in a few seconds point out where the teacher had erred. He'd have been loaded up with extra credit in your class, Ms Sue! Of course, he naturally didn't need it.
