a closed equation is a statement of fact that may be true or false
eg
2 + 2 = 4 closed true
3 + 2 = 5 closed false
an open equation is one where it may or may not be true depending on the value of a variable
eg
x + 2 = 4
eg
2 + 2 = 4 closed true
3 + 2 = 5 closed false
an open equation is one where it may or may not be true depending on the value of a variable
eg
x + 2 = 4

Look at the following points.
(4, 0), (3, −1), (6, 3), (2, −4)
Which are solutions to y = x − 4? Choose all correct answers.

How can you use an equation to make a prediction from a pattern?

here is what i think
lets say you want to find out the 267,000 letter or number in your pattern then you can just use that number plug it in your equation and find your letter or number

I am not sure what this is about. My guess would be what I call curve fitting the data. In the simple case you try to find the best straight line that goes more or less through the data points. If you do this by minimizing the sum of the squares of the differences between your line of form y = m x + b and the data points it is called "linear regression. However there are much more elaborate functions such as exponential and polynomial snd trigonometric and the problem can be extended to patterns in many dimensions.

Once you have your euation of form
y = m x + b
or
y = A sin x
or
y = a x^2 + b x + c
or whatever you think kind of fits the pattern,
Then you put in any old x you are interested in and get y
y = m x + b
or
y = A sin x
or
y = a x^2 + b x + c
or whatever you think kind of fits the pattern,
Then you put in any old x you are interested in and get y
