Reflect the point (-3,1) over the y axis. What is the new coordinate. Give explanation.

First, try plotting (-3,1) on a graphing paper. You'll see it's in the 2nd Quadrant. When you reflect it on the y-axis, the new point will be on the third quadrant (where both x & y coordinates are negative). Therefore the new point is at (-3,-1).

excuse me? reflection in the y-axis changes only the x-coordinate. Using the y-axis as an "axle" rotate the point 1/2 turn, to wind up at (3,1)

(x,y) -> (-x,y)
