    $x invested at 8%, then 8000-x invested at 6%
.08x + .06(8000-x) = 550
8x + 6(8000-x) = 55000
8x + 48000 - 6x = 55000
2x = 7000
x = 3500
so $3500 invested at 8%, and $4500 invested at 6%
check:
..08(3500) + .06(4500) = 550

.08x + .06(8000-x) = 550
8x + 6(8000-x) = 55000
8x + 48000 - 6x = 55000
2x = 7000
x = 3500
so $3500 invested at 8%, and $4500 invested at 6%
check:
..08(3500) + .06(4500) = 550
