Why are so few alternative sources of energy in use in the united states today??

That is because many other sources of energy other than fossil fuels are expensive. Also, some of them are not available all the time (such as wind) and they might have other negative effects as well. Go to nationalatlas dot gov and search "energy sources" for an informative article, which is the first choice.
