Which sentence is written correctly?

1. A mother and two children become one of those victims.

2. A mother and two children become those victims.

Obviously the first sentence is wrong because three people can't be considered "one."

The second sentence is correct in some contexts. However, the past tense -- became -- would be used in most sentences.
