Passage 1
Passage 2
Extreme Weather
A. Ghimire

A tropical cyclone is a circular storm. It takes place on warm oceans. It is known by different names based on where it happens. Both hurricanes and typhoons are tropical cyclones. They are extreme weather events.

Names of tropical cyclones
The weakest tropical cyclones are called tropical depressions. If it gains speed and the winds reach 39 miles per hour, it becomes a tropical storm. A tropical cyclone with the speed of 74 miles per hour or higher is a hurricane or a typhoon. If the storm begins in the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, or eastern North Pacific, it is called a hurricane. If the storm begins in the Northwest Pacific, it is called a typhoon. The same storm is called tropical cyclone in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Conditions
Four conditions can cause tropical cyclones: weather disturbance, warm tropical oceans, moisture, and light winds. If these conditions last for a long while, the weather can get extreme. The winds get stronger. The rain lasts a while. Floods may follow. The ocean waves can increase in size. Sometimes, not all the conditions mix, but a tropical cyclone can be predicted to happen in a day or two. Then, it is called a potential tropical cyclone.

Season
The hurricane season in the Atlantic is from June 1 to November 30. Sometimes, hurricanes happen in other months as well.
