Let's say X represents a full can of paint
If X represents a full can on paint, then:
- 1/8 of X was used in the morning
- 5/8 of (7/8 of X) was used in the afternoon
So you would add the two values together to get a sum
1/8X + 5/8(7/8X)
= 1/8X +35/64X
=43/64X
Therefore 43/64 of the pain can was used
*************************************************
Now I'm assuming that the question is saying that George used 5/8 of the remaining paint from the morning. If they were talking about 5/8 in terms of the original amount of pain then you would simply do the following:
1/8 + 5/8
= 6/8
= 3/4
