tony cut 2 ft 7 1/2 in. length from 8 in long board. what is the remaining length of the board.

Something is wrong with you units. You can't cut more than 2 feet from an 8 inch board.

8 ft = 7 feet, 12 inches

7 ft, 12 in - 2 ft, 7 1/2 in = 5 ft, 4 1/2 in

Okay.. good.

You could change everything to inches to do the work.

8 foot board = 96 inches
2 foot 7 1/2 inches = 31 1/2 inches

Now you can subtract: be careful with the fractions.

If you think of 96 as 95 + 1
which is the same as 95 + 2/2
You can subtract 31 from 95 and 1/2 from 2/2

This gives your answer in inches. To change it back to feet divide by 12.
