    I can give you a timeline from my own family history in the Midwest --
From 1865 to about 1890, all of my ancestors were farmers. Then a few moved to small towns and owned and operated small businesses. By 1930, the younger generations had gone to college and got jobs in cities. In 1940, none of my ancestors lived on farms.
