why do we not feel weightless even though we are in "free fall" toward the sun?

We are stuck to the earth and we are so small by comparison, it is the only effect we feel.
If the world suddenly stopped, the people on the leading side would fly off, in freefall, til the mass of the earth pulled them back down, unless they had escape velocity...
