recall the half-angle formula
tan x/2 = (1-cosx)/sinx
tan(45/2) = (1-1/√2)/(1/√2) = √2 - 1
tan x/2 = (1-cosx)/sinx
tan(45/2) = (1-1/√2)/(1/√2) = √2 - 1
