What type of odd jobs Booker T. worked at while to travel to Hampton to go to Hampton Institute????

I didn't find any descriptions of his odd jobs then. A good guess would be that he worked as casual labor on farms, or whatever jobs the farmers and their their wives needed to done -- perhaps housework, chopping wood, cutting grass, etc,
