How do I calculate the initial velocity of a ball if i've only given a maximum height of 12metres above its starting point?

If H=12 m is as high as it rises, the potential energy there must equal the initial kinetic energy

M g H = (1/2) M V^2
M cancels out, so
V = sqrt(2 g H)

g is the acceleration of gravity
