Ms. Sue the shape i am dealing with is sorta like a crown (rectangle) without the square in the top middle.

I think the principle is the same. You have an 8-sided figure which makes it an octagon. Follow the instructions in the ehow website and see what you get.

You don't have enough information.
It is not enough to know the 8 sides, you must also be given some angles.
An octagon is not a rigid shape.
Imagine a stop sign, which is an octagon, where the corners are somehow hinged. You could squish the shape sideways and thus change the area without changing the length of the sides
(On Sesame street years ago, Oscar took a rectangle and squished it into a parallelogram. Then he said , "Now I have a wrecked angle". )
