Ms. Sue the shape i am dealing with is sorta like a crown (rectangle) without the square in the top middle.

It is not enough to know the 8 sides, you must also be given some angles.

An octagon is not a rigid shape.
Imagine a stop sign, which is an octagon, where the corners are somehow hinged. You could squish the shape sideways and thus change the area without changing the length of the sides
