Here is how you know.
The general formula for a saturated hydrocarbon (alkanes) is
C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n+2</sub>.

For unsaturated hydrocarbons(alkenes) it is
C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n</sub>.

For unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkynes) it is
C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n-2</sub>
