Right, for the reaction of hot sodium hydroxide plus chlorine , how come one of the products are 5NaCl and not Na5Cl seeing as we now know the oxidation state of cl is -5

You need to rephrase the question for it makes no sense as it stands. First, the oxidation state of Cl is not -5 but it is -1. With Na as +1 and Cl as -1, the formula for NaCl should be (and is) NaCl.
