Early pioneers thought that the forests were an unending resource. Why would they think that?

The eastern half of the country was mostly forested in our early days. Yet the population was low, compared with today. The pioneers could spend a lifetime cutting down trees and not replacing them -- and still see barely a dent in the forest.
